A Hand from Berkowitz
Well actually it is a hand from Bernie. We may not talk with Berkowitz, but we talk with people who do talk with Berkowitz. You hold this hand:
J 9,
xx,
K 10 x x,
K Q J x x.
Bernie did not give the vulnerability, but let’s suppose that you are South and the auction goes as follows, with East as dealer:
| West | North | East | South |

I think 3N or 4S is makable so I have to bid 3S. I won’t miss out on 4 of a minor if it is right.

4H = choice of games. Scoring type and vulnerability may affect my choice.

3S is clearly best. There is no certainty that game should be bid, especially an 11 trick minor suit game. 3S might be high enough.
